CooperRiis is:
- Individualized, comprehensive, holistic recovery services within a healing farm community for individuals who are at least 18 years of age.
- A nurturing, caring environment for learning, living and working designed to move residents toward better mental health with measurable outcomes.
- A modern complex on an 80-acre farm in the town of Mill Spring, North Carolina, about 45 miles southeast of Asheville, NC
- Community Programs in Asheville, Spring Hill and Tryon, NC.
- A 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization.
Philosophy and Conceptual Models:
- Our “healing farm community" gets its approach from a therapeutic community model that has been in practice for 90 years. The central concept is a living environment where staff and residents live and work together as a functioning community.
- CooperRiis has added Enhanced Recovery techniques, elements of modern psychiatry, an emphasis on person-centered care and a strong holistic component that honors the “whole” person.
CooperRiis utilizes a menu of services:
CooperRiis accommodates up to 36 residents who are over the age of 18 and desire to recover their mental health. Residents are usually diagnosed with schizophrenia or schizo-affective disorder, bipolar disorder, asperger’s disorder, depression, and/or borderline personality disorder.

- educational coaching and work training program
- access to expert psychopharmacology
- addictions counseling
- multimedia creative arts opportunities
- nutritional & exercise coaching
- smoking cessation guidance
- massage therapy, reflexology and access to complementary modalities such as acupuncture
After an average stay of six to nine months, residents may transfer to the CooperRiis Community Programs, which provide long-term, supportive housing and growth and employment opportunities.
Cost: Maximum monthly rate is $9800; after the first two months, rate reductions are offered, based on the financial circumstances of the resident’s family. Community Programs have lower costs.
