Nestled on a 20-acre campus-like setting in the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains, Newman Community Residence has provided residential treatment for persons with psychiatric conditions for almost 50  years. We are one of only a handful of “proprietary” community residences in the State of New York.  providing both long and short-term residential care specifically for and solely to individuals diagnosed with serious mental illness.

Newman Community Residence represents an affordable alternative to long-term care for adults with mental illness who seek a stress-free environment in which to regain stability and improve their mental health. Our kind, gentle, dedicated, and supportive staff provides the psychiatric support and nurturing environment conducive to personal growth for a community of adults.  Our therapeutic care environment allows individuals to advance at their own pace, gaining confidence as we celebrate successes.

A Supportive Treatment Community in a Rural Setting

Newman Community Residence provides a safe, stable community for mentally ill adults who cannot live independently. Our supportive, friendly, and home-like atmosphere enables persons recovering from mental illness to meet the physical and mental challenges associated with their psychiatric conditions.

Newman Community Residence encourages the development of independent living skills through work and community, which in turn promotes self-esteem and a sense of well-being. Everyone who comes here participates in our Community Living Activities and Daily Work Program according to his or her ability and tolerance.

We are situated in rural Columbia County, New York in the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains and Litchfield Hills. We are conveniently located a few miles from Great Barrington, Massachusetts, as well as Hudson and Rhinebeck, New York which offer a host of recreational and cultural activities that we frequent. Locally in Copake Falls, We have direct access to the Taconic State Park system with waterfalls, fishing, hiking trails, skiing, and many other activities that are an integral part of our program.

In-House Staff and Community Service Providers

At Newman Community Residence, staff live/work on site twenty-four hours a day and take responsibility for engaging and supporting adults with mental illness in their individual endeavors at wellness, consistent with their desire, tolerance, and capacity to participate.

Our services are designed to lessen the stress associated with reintegration into community living. We emphasize the development of personal management skills in a supportive setting. Working closely with local community service providers, we give full support and provide advocacy to help mentally ill adults gain full access to community and rehabilitative services, social programming, employment, educational and vocational training, and volunteer work. We follow residents’ successes and monitor progress closely. Medications are centrally stored and are self-administered under direct supervision
